white blossoms

A tree in my neighborhood is currently loaded with tight masses of white blossoms that look, to my untrained eye, like they might be dogwood.

If anyone knows their name, I would be happy to hear it. If you have a critique of this black and white photo, I would be more than grateful for that as well.

These are Japanese dogwood's that are purported to carry a disease that is killing the native dogwoods in KY. I never shoot them in revenge : ] best...jerry

@ordinaryimages: Ooops! I never knew there was such a thing as "botanical correctness." But you would be sorely tempted to break your policy if you saw these beauties. And your B&W take would be interesting to see! ;-)

Nina from Hamburg, Germany

A lovely, quiet contrast from yesterday's panaché of colour. These are beautiful in their simplicity - very pretty.

@Sarah: Yes, some days are quieter than others ;-) Thanks.

Japanese dogwoods, eh? I miss them in color, as always but they are lucious in their light/shade. How did you miss these earlier this year when you sought them so long like at home on the Lake Sacajawea trek to the school?

1 Jun 2009 11:28pm

@wendy: Good question. They only JUST came into bloom and are different than most Dogwood tress I have seen. There are masses and masses blooming on one rather large tree. Actually too many to photograph well....they all just jumble together.

Momo from Montpellier, France

as beautiful as your color flower images are there's something extra or special in this b&w...maybe it's just my personal taste, but removing the color distills form, texture, light, in their presence down to a basic level that just says 'yes' to me...I'm feeling this way way, lately, about all of my own color work, like the color is a distraction...and I love strong color...miro, matisse, two of my favorite artists...and slightly washed out polaroid color, etc...my only critique, it's not really a critique, just my own personal preference...if i pp'd this I'd probably add some noise to the image...doesn't that sound crazy?...but i do it to many of my images...ok, i overdo it on some, i know...

@Momo: Your wonderful critique has spurred me on to try new things! Working with black and white and with "noise" is something I have yearned to do but didn't know how. Your remarks sent me to studying my PhotoShop for Dummies book---now I am experimenting with abandon with B&W, levels, blur, noise, etc. You have opened doors for me. I am so appreciative! Merci Beaucoup.
